Walter Phillips Gallery Public Programs Work Study

Program dates: August 13, 2012 - March 30, 2013

Application deadline: June 29, 2012

Program Information

The Walter Phillips Gallery Public Programs Work Study is an internship-style opportunity designed to enhance participants’ knowledge, build administrative skills, and provide work experience for emerging curators and artists who have an interest in gallery oriented public programs. The work portion of the experience will primarily focus on activities that support and assist WPG activities such as exhibitions, tours, publications, and Banff International Curatorial Institute events under the direct mentorship of the curator and other members of the WPG team.

Learning opportunities arise in the development, organization, and implementation of public programs and events that complement the WPG exhibition schedule. The participant will also be involved in the development of grant applications. Opportunities to attend formal lectures, workshops, discussion groups, and other cultural events are all part of this program.

Benefits to participants include enhanced decision-making and problem-solving expertise, as well as communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills. In addition to the work component of the program, participants have one day each week that is dedicated to their personal research activities as outlined in their learning objectives.

Work Study placements are appropriate for recent graduates of art history, museum studies or studio-based programs and individuals wishing to leave their current work worlds or formal advanced studies for a period of time in order to gain professional experience and expand and develop their careers and capabilities. These programs require full-time commitment and independent thinking.
