Electronic Submissions

Along with the basic application form that can be submitted electronically, all other text-based support materials can be sent as an email attachment to the following address: Registrar_LiteraryArts@banffcentre.ca.

When submitting electronically, please upload ONE file with support materials #4 and up contained within that ONE file (ie. one Word .doc file with #4 Resume, #5 References, #6 Project Description, #7 Portfolio). Attachments should be sent in a recognized word processing format. Microsoft Word is preferred. Rich Text Format is another option, if you do not have Microsoft Word. Please indicate clearly which program the support materials are for. Pages should be numbered with your name clearly indicated on each page. Audio files, images, recordings, or other multi-media support materials cannot be sent by email.

If we do not receive your application support materials, the Office of the Registrar will contact you.

Hard Copy Submissions

Applicants submitting audio files, images, recordings, or other multi-media materials as part of the application requirements, or applicants wishing to provide text-based support materials in hard copy rather than electronically, should submit materials to:

Office of the Registrar
The Banff Centre
107 Tunnel Mountain Drive, Box 1020
Banff, AB
T1L 1H5 Canada

Note: Submissions must be cleanly printed, double-spaced, on unbound 8 ½” x 11” paper of good bond (if possible, please use double-sided printing). No three-hole-punched paper or cerlox-bound copies will be accepted. As portfolios must be copied for adjudicators, please do not use staples. Also note that original magazines, newspaper clippings, books, tapes, disks, or CD-ROMS are not acceptable. Submitted material will not be returned. Applications that do not meet the above criteria may not be considered.

Please indicate clearly, on each item submitted, your name and which program the support materials are for.

Eligibility

Applicants will normally, but not necessarily, have published a body of work (a book of poetry, fiction or other narrative prose, or substantial publication in magazines and/or anthologies). Applicants are accepted to the Writing Studio to work on a book-length manuscript, which they will continue to develop during their time in the program. The preferred situation is that the participant be already at work on the manuscript, so that material exists that can be discussed and edited.

We are unable to offer editorial assistance to writers who have manuscripts already submitted and are in the editing process with a publisher.

Note: Past participants of the Writing Studio or the Wired Writing Studio must wait at least one year before applying again to either program, and should be working on a different project. Those accepted as participants to the program who subsequently find themselves unable to attend for the full program schedule are asked to withdraw and re-apply another year.

Adjudication and Notification

Participants are selected by impartial adjudicators on the basis of their submitted material. In addition to literary merit, consideration will be given to the likelihood that the writer’s work will benefit from the program.

Applicants will be notified of their status as soon as adjudication is complete. The approximate notification date is the end of January.
