Open Studios: Music Curated by Pedja Muzijevic, Concert in the 21st Century.

Overview

Concert in the 21st Century is designed for classical musicians or ensembles to provide an opportunity to work with highly experienced professionals engaged in presenting classical music today. Participants will take a closer look at the existing concert format and explore new ways to present classical and contemporary music. This program is designed for musicians who want to go beyond the traditional concert experience.

What does the program offer?

Participants will be provided with the time to think and create, the opportunity to consult one-on-one with faculty members and participate in lively discussions, and will be immersed in concert in the 21st century. 

Building on previous innovative residencies with Pedja Muzijevic, Concert in the 21st Century offers an informal, nurturing though intense, learning environment for participants to gain skills in concert curation and making important performance decisions. These decisions include concert lengths, performer placements, lighting, and overall concert experience. In addition, space and technical support will be available for a limited number of classical music collectives coming with interdisciplinary artists such as dancers, actors, lighting designers, or video artists.

Who should apply?

Applications are welcome from musicians wanting to learn about concert presentation and curation, as well as musicians in the process of developing new innovative presentations for the stage. Chamber music groups are also welcome to apply.

Studio recordings: Due to the focus of this residency, full commercial recordings cannot be integrated into this program.

Application fee: $65 for individuals or groups. Individual group members must pay an additional registration fee of $35 on acceptance.

*Financial Aid up to 65% is available for this program (based on shared accommodation).

How to Apply

This program accepts both individual and group applications. 

For group applications only the leader must complete a single application and upload supporting materials on behalf of the whole group. Supporting materials must include individual resumes and a single project proposal for the collective.

Financial Assistance

Be sure to complete the Financial Aid section to be eligible for financial assistance.

Resume

A one-page resume or C.V. describing academic, professional, and other relevant experience.

Personal Statement

Describe how this residency will assist you in your career and long-term goals as an artist. Also indicate your expectations from this residency program.

Project Proposal

A one-page project description, including the theme, an outline of materials and facilities required, and indicative timelines.

Recordings

  • Submit a sample representative of your work on audio or video support. It is your responsibility to demonstrate the full scope of your capability by selecting contrasting works. If possible, please include one live recording. Indicate the title, composer, performer(s), and date of recording for each work.
  • Pre-formed ensembles must submit group recordings.
  • Recording and videos submitted should have been completed no more than 12 months prior to the application deadline.
  • There is a limit of three audio/video files within the tool.

Resource Request

Outline all studio, equipment, software, facility, or staff support requested in our upload tool. Final resource allocation is at the discretion of the department.

Adjudication

Participants are selected by impartial adjudicators on the basis of their submitted material. In addition to artistic merit, consideration will be given to the likelihood that the artist's work will benefit from the program.

Applicants will be notified of their status as soon as adjudication is complete.

All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee is subject to applicable taxes. Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of the Banff Centre. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
