Nicole Burisch is a critic and curator, currently based in Ottawa, where she is Assistant Curator, Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Canada. With a background working in artist-run centres, her projects focus on discourses of craft, feminism, performance, publishing, labour, and materiality within contemporary art. Previously she has held positions as Core Fellow Critic-in-Residence with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston from 2014-16, as Administrative Coordinator at Centre Skol from 2011-2014, as Director of Calgary’s Mountain Standard Time Performative Art Festival from 2007-2009, and as Managing Editor for MAWA’s Desire Change publication on feminist art in Canada. Her research (with Anthea Black) into curatorial strategies for politically engaged craft practices is included in milestone publications The Craft Reader (Berg) and Extra/ordinary: Craft and Contemporary Art (Duke University Press) and together they are currently co-editing a new publication, The New Politics of the Handmade: Craft, Art and Design, forthcoming from Bloomsbury.
