In recognition of National Indigenous History Month, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity featured a selection of Indigenous short films for free online reflecting diverse stories and perspectives from across Canada.

Films were available to watch on this page from June 21 - July 1. 

Flat Rocks weaves together breathtaking present-day footage of Kahnawake with archival photos dating back over 80 years revealing the community's way of life threatened by the St. Lawrence Seaway. A poetic narration in the Kanien’kéha (Mohawk) language voices the community's connection to the water. Seventy-nine-year-old Louis Diabo battles against the construction of Canada's St. Lawrence Seaway during the 1950s to save his farm and the Kahnawake Mohawk community.

NDN’s on the Airwaves is a short documentary set in Ohsweken, Ontario that explores what community-driven radio has meant to the First Nations community in this region. It is a story that follows Mohawk poet and radio host Janet Rogers in her return home after several years living on the West Coast of Turtle Island. The film focuses on CKRZ-FM on the Six Nations reservation—that for over 25 years has delivered a unique perspective on important news events, featured Indigenous talent and supported local artists—and on Janet’s re-connection with ‘place’ through finding her voice on the airwaves.
