BANFF, AB, April 13, 2026 – Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity is pleased to welcome public-sector leader Melanie Kwong to the Board of Governors for a three-year term from March 2026 to March 2029.
Kwong has dedicated her professional life to connecting people to arts and culture, community, and Canada’s landscapes and stories. A Banff resident, her current role is Vice-President, Strategic Policy, Business and Digital Services with Parks Canada. She also held roles with national museums, two Governors General, Export Development Canada, and Canadian Heritage.
Throughout her career, she has led national initiatives, including the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and Canada 150’s free entry to Parks Canada, inviting millions to reconnect with Canada’s natural and cultural heritage. More recently, she played a key leadership role in the response and recovery efforts during the 2024 Jasper wildfire, supporting teams and partners through one of the most challenging periods in the area’s history.
Welcoming Kwong to the Board of Directors fulfils Banff Centre’s commitment to appointing one board member charged with the administration of the Canada National Parks Act (Canada). She was nominated to the Board by the Minister of the Crown in right of Canada, charged with the administration of the National Parks Act (Canada), the Honourable Julie Dabrusin, Minister of the Environment, Climate Change and Nature.
“Banff Centre is a place where creative practice, bold thinking, and this landscape come together in a way that is unlike anywhere else in the world. Being nominated to serve on its Board of Governors is an honour, one that I will approach with deep respect for its mission, its people, and its role in shaping conversations that matter—locally, nationally, and internationally.”
Melanie Kwong
Kwong joins outgoing President and Chief Executive Officer of Parks Canada, Ron Hallman, on the Board of Governors, where he will remain a generally appointed member as he retires from the organization. She also joins previously announced members Santee Smith and Françoise E. Lyon, alongside Banff Centre President and CEO Chris Lorway and six public Governors appointed by the Government of Alberta, announced in April 2024: Board Chair Paul Baay, Brinna Brinkerhoff, Lori Paine, Naomi Schmold, Pinder Sandhu, and Myron Tétreault.
