Betty Birrell used to be low-key and liked to travel under the radar. She just wanted to ride forever. When you ask Betty what has changed since her debut in North Shore Betty last year, she says playfully, “Oh, I’m learning how to have an Instagram account (@bbbirell) – I had 19 photos of sunsets before North Shore Betty!”
This past year saw a shift in gears. Betty attended film screenings in Banff, Vancouver, Portland, Whistler, Bellingham, Edmonton, Ojai Valley, California, and North Vancouver. She met many amazing people inspired by her film, which motivates her more than ever.
Always looking for new trails to ride and to improve her skills, Betty is keen to share her experiences with the greater public. She participated in a panel discussion on marginalized groups in mountain biking (the topic was ageism), made a YouTube video with mountain biking star Remy Metailler called She Is 73!, and featured in This is BC hosted by Jay Durant on Global TV. Betty also joined two women’s riding groups, The Poss-E (e-bikes) and The Shore Sirens. In honour of International Women’s Day, Banded Peak Brewery in Calgary has even named a beer after her!
Betty also loves trail maintenance, hiking, and ski touring. Unfortunately, she had to miss four months of riding due to an accident last year. Now recovered, Betty is keen to jump back on her bike, and is planning a trip to Sun Peaks bike park this year.
