Overview  

This program provides early-career stage managers with the opportunity to enhance their skills under the guidance of professional mentors. Expand your stage management toolkit through hands-on experience in prompt script creation, script analysis, and effective communication. Gain practical experience supporting Kohkom’s premiere production of Babushka, as an assistant stage manager during the program. 

Description

This program offers a comprehensive, hands-on experience covering the entire production cycle. As an assistant stage manager, you will gain valuable insight into the collaborative nature of stage management while working alongside professional mentors, you will develop essential stage management skills, including:

  • Engage in the full production process – from pre-production and planning to rehearsals, technical rehearsals, opening night, and strike.
  • Effective communication with cast, crew, and creative teams. Including Script analysis and prompt script creation, cue calling and show execution.
  • Leadership and problem-solving in a fast-paced environment, including time management and scheduling.
  • Technical awareness and coordination with production departments to integrate all production elements.
  • Gain practical experience as an assistant stage manager for Kohkom’s premiere production of Babushka in the Margaret Greenham Theatre
  • Receive mentorship and feedback from experienced stage managers and theatre professionals.

This immersive opportunity will strengthen your confidence and expertise, equipping you with the tools necessary for a successful career in stage management.

Requirements

This program is for early-career stage managers who are looking to deepen their experience in both the rehearsal room and theatre setting. 

Ideal candidates should have some prior experience in stage management, either through educational training, community, or professional theatre, who are passionate about stage management and seeking hands-on experience to further develop their professional toolkit.

Eligibility

Applicants must be 18+ at the time of the program start date. 

Priority will be given to Canadian applications where applicable, however both Domestic and international applications are welcome. 

Visa Eligibility Information: 

  • Please note that Banff Centre programs do not meet the eligibility requirements for a Canadian Student Visa.
  • If you are accepted into our program, you must obtain a Visitor Visa to enter Canada. Accepted participants are responsible for identifying and complying with the immigration requirements to enter Canada as a visitor from their country of origin. If you require a Visitor Visa please check the current expected processing times well in advance of applying.

Application Fee

$65 for individuals or groups, $35 for applicants who identify as Indigenous.

The application fee is non-refundable. 100% of this fee goes towards the cost of administering the application in SlideRoom. 

Scholarships

  • Due to the generous support of the Slaight Family Foundation the scholarship covers 100% of tuition fees, meals, and accommodation costs.
  • A travel grant is also included. Regional maximums apply. The recipient must book their own travel.

Tax Information

Banff Centre will issue official tax receipts for eligible tuition fees and financial assistance and awards as required by the Income Tax Act. You will receive a T2202 (Tuition and Enrolment Certificate) for eligible tuition fees paid and a T4A (Statement of Pension, Retirement, Annuity, and Other Income) for applicable financial assistance and awards.

Letter of intent

A one-page letter explaining why you wish to attend this program, what you hope to learn or achieve and what impact it could have on your artistic practice. 

Financial Assistance

Be sure to complete the Financial Aid question in SlideRoom to be eligible for the financial assistance.

Adjudication

Participants are chosen by an adjudication panel comprising of internal and external assessors. The selection criteria include:

  • Required skills and experience.
  • The potential for the applicant's work to benefit from the program.

Our programs are highly competitive with a limited number of places available. Applicants will be notified of their selection status as soon as the adjudication process is complete. Due to the high volume of applications individual feedback will not be provided.
